Sor Chang Kow (White Elephant Gym) Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. Descended from Muay Boran, Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport.

The Name

The word Muay derives from the Sanskrit mavya which means "to bind together". Muay Thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" or the "Science of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "points of contact", as opposed to "two points" (fists) in boxing and "four points" (hands and feet) used in other more regulated combat sports, such as kickboxing.

Lee Chesters - Defeater of Champions

38 years old
Fight record 23 wins, 7 losses, and 1 draw.

Lee started Muay Thai after his professional footballing career ended at the age of 20. After training for 2 years he was asked to train for his first amateur fight, 1 week into the training he was asked to take a professional fight instead, an area title fight, when Darren Castledine fell ill. Despite giving away 3kg and 10 fights experience Lee won on points, it was a fantastic start to his competitive career and that fight was voted the best domestic fight of 1995.

Between 1995 and 1998 Lee fought most of the big names on the UK circuit, losing only once, then he moved on to the International level winning the Commonwealth title and fighting in Bangkok at the Royal Event – The Kings Cup. In 1999 Lee fought the No 5 ranked fighter in the World, although he lost to a split decision the fight was voted best international fight by Muay Thai magazine.

In 2000 Lee was invited to fight on the King’s 72nd Birthday he beat the Champion of South Thailand and broke into the World Top Ten. In 2001 he won the European Champion title on his 3rd attempt by elbow knock out. Following this success Lee was given the opportunity to fight for the supreme World Muay Thai Council (WMC) title against the reigning champion Mot-Eck Mungseema. This was the first time a World Title fight had been sanctioned outside Thailand. Lee became WMC World Champion after winning on points. To put this achievement in context in the 11 years since he won that title only 2 other Britons have done the same in any weight division.

As a coach Lee is considered one of the best up and coming, having already trained junior and professional champions. Despite his own competition success Lee considers the best feeling as a coach is to train people who are not naturally gifted.
